Artist buys £3,000 home slipping into the sea ... to paint it being washed away

Published 31st Dec 2009

An artist has bought a property that is slipping into the sea so he can paint it being washed away.

Kane Cunningham bought the house at Knipe Point near Scarborough for just £3,000 - it's value dropping from £150,000 as a landslip prepares to swallow it.

Several neighbouring properties have already slipped off the eroding cliff, 200ft into the bay below.

Mr Cunningham has placed cameras throughout the house and will record its final moments, as it succumbs to its inevitable fate.

The 48-year-old artist, who runs the fine art department at Yorkshire Coast College said the house symbolised 'lost dreams, financial disaster and threatening sea levels'

The 48-year-old landscape painter, who runs the fine art department at Yorkshire Coast College told The Times the house symbolised 'lost dreams, financial disaster and threatening sea levels'.

He said: 'People might ask can a house that is about to fall into the sea be a work of art? I say it can.'

As he waits for nature to take its course, Mr Cunningham has completed a series of paintings of the building and its views over Cayton Bay.

He hopes other artists, poets and musicians will join him in creating art on the site before it disappears. Painters would especially enjoy 'one of the most amazing views along this coast'.

The project will culminate in an exhibition of paintings, photographs and video at Scarborough Art Gallery next October.

The timeline Mr Cunningham has to create his work is unknown.

'It could go in three days, three months or tonight,' he said. 'It depends on what kind of weather we have over winter, but it’s going to go. I want to try to make the most of it before it’s gone.'
