Published 04th Aug 2010

Peel has secured planning permission for the redevelopment of the East Float site which forms the heart of its £4.5bn Wirral Waters regeneration scheme in the north-west of England.

The plans for the East Float site on the derelict docks in Birkenhead, accepted by Wirral Council Planning Committee, will provide 15m sq ft of mixed-use space.

The planning application, which represents the largest urban regeneration project in the UK, included 13,521 new homes, up to 4.5m sq ft of office and research development floor space, and more than 645,000 sq ft of retail space.

Peel now also have permission to develop up to 409,000 sq ft of hotel and conference facilities and more than 1m sq ft of culture, education, leisure, community and amenity floor space.

The East Float development is expected to deliver more than 20,000 new jobs and be home to up to 30,000 new residents.

The outline planning application for the East Float site was submitted on 14 December 2009.

Lindsey Ashworth, Peel director, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Wirral Planning Committee has reached this positive decision, it is what the public wanted and what the area is crying out for. This is an historical day for the future of Wirral and the entire City Region”.
