Fruit and vegetable growers are protesting over a council survey which asks if they are gay.
The questionnaire is put to residents when they apply for one of the 18 allotments available in Lincoln.
The city council wants to know their sexual orientation, race and religion.
Fred Hyde, 61, of the Local Allotment Holders' Association, said: 'It's damned intrusive. Why do they want to know all these details? All these people are doing is trying to grow some fruit and veg.
'If I got one through, I'd send it right back and would be advising my members to do the same.'
Taxpayers' Association spokeswoman, Fiona McEvoy, said the venture was a waste of time and money.
'It is local authority nonsense at its worst,' she said. 'It's costing money and taking up the time of council officials.
'Who cares how many lesbians, Christians or black people want allotments?'
City Council spokeswoman, Alison Lewis, insisted the personal details would not be made public.
'We monitor equality and diversity purely to get an understanding of our customers' and residents' needs,' she said.
'The information is kept secure and private.'
