Published 19th Feb 2009

Householders' water bills are to rise by an average of 4.1% from 1 April this year, the water industry regulator said yesterday.

Under the terms of the deal between Ofwat and the water industry, prices can rise by an agreed inflation figure - currently 3% - plus a margin for each water company, which for 2009-10, will average 1.1%. The UK's biggest supplier, Thames, is increasing prices by 2.4%. Southern Water has been allowed to raise bills by 5.6%, while United Utilities will impose a 5.3% rise. Customers of South West Water, who pay the highest charges in the UK, will see bills increase by 0.9%.
