New warning for lax homeowners

Published 03rd Sep 2007

Halifax Home Insurance warns homeowners that poor home security can invalidate a claim…

As unforced burglary claims soar during the summer months, Halifax Home Insurance is advising homeowners to beware of unforced opportunistic burglary and avoid giving thieves an easy time.
• Leaving windows and doors open, even when the home is occupied, can be viewed as an open invitation by burglars.
• Claims for unforced burglary rose by 50% last year in August.
• Over half (55%) of burglaries happen when the home is occupied.
• Poor home security can invalidate some home insurance policies.

Senior underwriting manager Vicky Emmott said: "During the summer, we invariably see claims for unforced burglary increase dramatically, as people leave doors and windows open to keep their homes cool.

“We know that opportunist thieves are on the lookout for the chance to steal items left within easy reach such as handbags, laptops, car keys, mobile phones and MP3 Players.

“Burglars can be in and out in seconds, so we are advising people to keep valuables out of sight, and avoid leaving doors and windows open when rooms are unoccupied, or when out in the garden."

Most home insurance policies stipulate that homeowners should take 'reasonable care' of their possessions, meaning that the property insured must be kept in good condition, good repair and owners should take reasonable steps to avoid loss or damage.

Top tips to avoid an unforced burglary

1. When spending time in the back garden, ensure that doors and windows at the front of the house are locked so that have-a-go burglars can't get it easily.

2. Always use safety latches on windows so burglars can't get in easily. At night time, limit open windows to occupied rooms.

3. Keep any valuable personal items such as car keys, mobile phones, cameras and MP3 players out of sight to prevent opportunistic thieves reaching in and grabbing what they can.

4. Join a neighbourhood watch scheme.

5. Check your home insurance policy and make sure items of high value or special interest are named on your policy. Halifax Home Insurance offers unlimited cover on both buildings and contents insurance.

Vicky concluded: "Unfortunately those who don't keep home security in mind may find that they are not covered for any resulting stolen items."
