Semi-detached homes win in the popularity stakes

Published 01st May 2008

A new report from Nationwide shows that semi-detached properties account for 32 per cent of home sales in the UK.

It means that it is the most popular property type in the country, with terraced properties accounting for 27 per cent of sales.

The average price of a semi-detached house was recorded as £174,554 in the first quarter of 2008.

This signals a rise of 1.6 per cent annually and a five-year increase of 49.6 per cent.

Semi-detached properties are most likely to be brought in the north-west, where they account for 43 per cent of sales, while London is the region where they are least popular.

The report also revealed that new build semi-detached homes tend to have more bedrooms than older properties.

A total of 21 per cent of properties of this type which are classed as new builds have at least four bedrooms, compared to 15 per cent of those built before World War One.
