Students 'should inspect gas safety of accommodation'

University students have been urged to take a "hands-on" approach to inspecting the standard of gas appliances in their rented accommodation.

According to the National Union of Students (NUS) and gas regulator Corgi, checking gas safety certificates is something that is very important to do, even though it is often not high on the priorities of new university undergraduates.

Ama Uzowuru, NUS vice-president of welfare, explained: "It's important that they are more hands-on with this and the student union has a role to play to make students know what they should be looking for.

"It's about education and letting them know that these are the things they should be checking for and once they know this they will start asking their landlords about them."

She also urged students to check when maintenance was last performed on their boilers and to consider installing carbon monoxide alarms to detect any gas leaks.

Research conducted for Corgi this month revealed that adults are no better when it comes to gas safety. A survey by Tickbox.net and Opinion Matters indicated that just 11 pr cent of adults think checking with their landlord for a gas safety record is a priority.
