Many tenants will rent forever

Published 10th Aug 2007

Hometrack, the property information organisation, says that 70% of private rental tenants are effectively trapped, unable to afford access to owner occupation on a long term or permanent basis.

Hometrack estimates demand for an additional 600,000 private rented homes by 2021, requiring £100 billion of new investment.

Richard Donnell, Hometrack’s research director, said: “Our analysis shows that the private rented market we have today has simply become an extension of the affordable housing sector.

“But despite the recent buy-to-let boom, privately rented homes let on the open market account for just 8% of supply in England. The key challenge here is how to stimulate an increase in the supply of rented homes in those places where they are most needed.”
